Cannon Beach is the next town after Seaside, and, probably, the most well-known of the whole coast. If you google “Oregon Coast”, chances are the first picture you see will be of the famous Haystack Rock, a huge 72-m-tall boulder, rising out of the ocean right next to Cannon Beach. The actual beach, not the town. The town got its name from the beach it sits on. The beach itself got its name from – guess what – a cannon, washed ashore near here. The cannon belonged to a schooner, which sank in 1846 in the mouth of Columbia River. That estuary is one of the most dangerous places to navigate, so much so that it is called the Graveyard of the Pacific.
Because of the picturesqueness of Haystack Rock, or maybe for some other reason, but Cannon Beach has become one of the most popular resorts on the Oregon Coast. The fact that it’s the easiest costal town to get to from Portland, the biggest city in Oregon, also helps. Cannon Beach is considered a bit posher than Seaside, with its fine-dining restaurants, artisanal shops, and art studios. But essentially, it’s still just a cute little seaside town, good for an evening stroll after a day at the beach, and not very much else.

Haystack Rock dominates Cannon Beach, towering 72 meters above the ground. The two tall outcrops behind Haystack Rock are called the Needles. As you can see, the Haystack is very near the beach, easily accessible during the low tide. The smaller piece on the right side of the Rock was once much bigger, but they had to blast it off, to prevent people from climbing the Haystack.Isn′t she beautiful, all craggy and mossy, and covered in birds′ droppings? The Needles standing sentinel over the beach. These are the Bird Rocks, at the northern end of the beach, birds included...And everything what we′ve just seen here, but in video format. Now looking away from the ocean. Landward, so to speak. And this is the view to the south, towards Arcadia Beach (the next beach after Cannon if driving from Seaside). The town of Cannon Beach, tucked neatly between the ocean and the Oregon Coast mountains. The two standalone rocks in this picture are called Jockey Cap and Silver Point.
